My just three year old recently started coming out of his room at night saying there were scary things in his room, and was quite distressed. Like most parents, I told him that there was nothing there and consoled him. A friend of mine, however, told me that the best thing to do is to accept what they say (if they something is scary, then in their head there IS something scary so it DOES exist and no grown-up rationalisation is going to take that away). The best thing to do is fight fire with fire… or fight imaginary villains with imaginary heroes. Give your toddler a magical power that he can use to make scary things vanish away! We are now using magical rainbow dust that he always has in his pockets, and when you throw the dust at scary things they vanish into thin air and HE IS THE CHAMPION and all of the magical creatures sing and dance in his honour.
